The School
Was founded in 1995 in Highgate village to provide the highest quality ballet and pre-ballet classes to children aged 3 and over in a positive and inspiring learning environment.
Our aim is to bring the joy of dancing to classical music provided by live accompaniment into the studio and give every child the opportunity to dance with ease and grace, incorporating these skills into many aspects of their lives.
Highgate Ballet School offers classes in the Cecchetti Method from beginners up to Advanced with exams in both the recreational and vocational divisions. Classes are also offered in Musical Theatre, ISTD Tap leading to exams, Contemporary dance, two pre-vocational programmes for ages 9-12 and 12+, Gyrokinesis and regualr holiday courses and special events with guest teachers.
In addition to the main school in Highgate village, there are classes at Jacksons Lane by Highgate tube station, in High Barnet at the Wood Street branch and at Our Lady of Dolours Parish Centre opposite Hendon town hall.
Our teachers are highly qualified, experienced professionals. All staff are committed to ongoing professional development and are CRB checked.
Whether a child attends once weekly for fun or is considering dance as a career, ballet develops poise, self discipline, musicality, rhythm and a highly increased physical and sensory awareness.
At Highgate Ballet School we aim to give every child the chance to develop the dancer within them and particularly focus on developing musicality and correct basic placement alongside appropriate technique.
Students who wish to work at a pre- vocational level are encouraged to attend additional classes, audition for Associate programmes and other external dance programmes and performing opportunities. A minimum twice weekly attendance from Grade 4 is required for eligibility to do pointework.
At the end of each term, children have the opportunity to show their parents and friends what they have learned during the term in "Watch Week". There are regular school recitals for children in Primary and above.
There are additional performing opportunities for students aged 9 and over with Highgate Ballet School Youth Dance Company (directed by HBS teacher, Maddy Wynne-Jones)
Young choreographers are encouraged to develop their skills and enthusiastic students attend Associate and scholarship programmes, summer schools and perform with youth dance companies.
